Stampeding Wildebeests

Creature — Antelope Beast2 generic manaGreen manaGreen mana

A 5/4 trampler for four mana reads like a clean rate until the upkeep clause comes due: every turn it forces you to return a green creature you control to hand, and the bounce is the toll for the body. If the Wildebeests is your only green creature, it is the only eligible choice, sending itself home and taxing you four mana to recast (green permanents that aren't creatures don't count; the ability only sees green creatures). It belongs to an early-era idiom of oversized green beaters undercut by a self-inflicted handicap, where the cost is welded into the card rather than a downside you can sequence around. The wrinkle is that the rent can become rent control: with other green creatures on board, you choose what goes back, and returning one with a useful enters-the-battlefield trigger each upkeep flips the tax into an engine. That is the seam later designs would mine far more deliberately with creatures built to be replayed. Pointed at nothing, it punishes you for fielding a fat body; pointed at the right green creatures, it staples a free repeatable bounce to five power and trample. The friction is the point, and learning which creature to send home each upkeep is the whole puzzle.
