A 1/3 flier is a defensive tool before it is anything else: it holds the ground against the small evasive threats that would otherwise chip in overhead, and it is far too modest to worry anyone on the swing. The renown trigger exists to bend that arithmetic exactly once. Connect for the first time and the body grades up to a 2/4, which is both a sturdier obstacle and a clock that ticks faster than the printed stats implied. The counter sticks permanently, so the promotion is real, but the trigger only fires while the creature isn't already renowned: no compounding, no second counter, no incentive to run it back into the same block twice. That one-step upgrade is the design's core deal. It gives an aggressive deck a reason to attack with a creature whose stats otherwise argue for holding it back, and it asks the opponent whether the first connection is worth conceding before the card has earned its reward. The toughness-forward frame keeps the trade fair on both ends: the creature is happy to trade blows on defense until the board tips, then it presses the small edge it has banked. This is the renown keyword working as intended, rewarding a single successful attack without opening the door to the runaway feedback that pumped-out combat creatures can create.
