Spurnmage Advocate

Creature — Human NomadWhite mana

Built on a single counterintuitive premise that ran through a whole cycle of these Advocate Nomads: each wanted you to fill an opponent's graveyard, then cash that filling for an effect. Here the cost is two cards handed back across the table and the payoff is a destroyed attacker, repeatable for the price of tapping a 1/1. The math is deliberately ugly. You are conceding card advantage (returning two cards to the opponent's hand) to remove one creature already committed to combat, which means the card only makes sense in a deck that wants the opponent's graveyard empty: one fighting flashback, threshold, or reanimation, where two cards returned to hand are strictly worse for the opponent than two cards in the yard. The choice of cards rather than spells is the quiet release valve: against a graveyard full of fetched lands and milled chaff, you can return the two least threatening cards and keep the recursion denial pointed where it hurts. Take that graveyard-hate angle away and the trade stops reading as fair and starts reading as backbreaking, against you. The destroy clause is the bait; the recursion-denial is the actual job, a repeatable answer that punishes the precise strategies its era was built around, sold at the cost of conceding raw economy to anyone not playing them. Against a creature deck with an empty yard it does almost nothing; against a threshold deck it is a tapper that quietly turns off their best cards every turn. A narrow answer that demands the metagame come to it.
