Spotted Griffin

Creature — Griffin3 generic manaWhite mana

Portal was Magic's introductory product, a set built to teach the game's core grammar without the noise of the main expansions, and this flying griffin was one of its primers. A 3 generic manaWhite mana 2/3 with a single keyword exists to demonstrate what flying does: how an evasive body grinds out a stalled ground board, why a creature in the air can attack past blockers that would eat it on the ground, and how evasion turns a modest clock into an inevitable one. There is no second clause to parse, no activated ability, no trigger. That legibility is the design intent. The combat math is the lesson; a new player learns it by watching a 2/3 swing in unblocked turn after turn while the bigger ground creatures sit there.

The rate was never why it existed. A 2/3 flyer for four mana was already behind the curve at printing, and white has produced sharper evasive bodies in every era since. What the card represents is onboarding philosophy in its purest form: establish the baseline behavior of a keyword cleanly, with nothing around it, before more complex sets start bending that baseline. It is the kind of card a design team prints so that everything more interesting has something to be measured against.
