Spore Cloud
A combat trick that erases the entire combat math rather than tilting it. The Fog clause is the obvious half: prevent all combat damage and the attack achieves nothing this turn. But the tempo tax is where the design actually lives. Tapping every blocker and then denying the next untap step to both attackers and blockers means the defending player walks away with their board locked down too, so this is not a pure defensive blowout. It punishes overextension on both sides equally, a deliberate symmetry: you cast it knowing your own creatures freeze alongside the enemy's. The value comes from who can better afford the lost untap, usually the player who committed fewer attackers to a doomed swing. Green of this era rarely got instant-speed answers at all, and a Fog that also delays an entire army for a full turn cycle is a far heavier swing than damage prevention alone suggests. The closest relatives are the Fog line and creatures-don't-untap effects like Sleep, but folding both into one instant gives green a compound stall: it buys the current turn and cripples the next one. The card reads as defensive, but its real axis is denying the opponent their attack step on two consecutive turns for a single three-mana commitment.
