Spite // Malice

Instant // Instant3 generic manaBlue mana3 generic manaBlack mana

Invasion's split cards split along the gold seams of the plane's war, and the Spite // Malice pairing is the most quietly elegant of the bunch: two answers that share their cost but nothing in color but cover the two halves of a control deck's worst fears. Spite is a hard counter aimed only at noncreature spells, the wrath or planeswalker or game-ending sorcery you cannot afford to resolve. Malice is the creature half, an unconditional kill on anything nonblack that strips regeneration along the way. Neither side is exotic on its own; the design idea is that you carry one card and choose at the moment of need which threat to meet. A split card in this era could only be cast as a single half (the fused-casting rules came much later), so the choice was binary and final: the spell you cast is the spell you spent, and the other half stays a memory in the graveyard. That constraint is what made the cycle a deckbuilding statement rather than a value play. You were not getting two spells; you were getting flexibility taxed by the cost of whichever half you needed, with the unused option locked away. For a two-color control shell that wanted to answer both the unstoppable noncreature spell and the unkillable creature, this was a single slot doing the work of a hedged sideboard, decided on the stack rather than between games.
