Spirit Shackle

Enchantment — AuraBlack manaBlack mana

A slow-burn debuff aura built around a trigger condition that was novel for its era: tapping. The card weaponizes the act of using a creature, so the opponent pays a -0/-2 tax every time they attack, every time they activate a tap ability, every time they tap to pay a cost. The math is brutal on small utility creatures and mana dorks: a one-toughness creature dies the first time it taps, and a two-toughness creature dies on its first tap as well, since a single -0/-2 counter drops it to zero. The choice of -0/-2 counters rather than a flat toughness reduction matters: the shrinkage is permanent and stacks across instances, so the aura functions less like a temporary Weakness and more like a slow execution that grinds down anything tough enough to survive the first tap. The card reads strangely against the decades that followed it, when creatures trended larger, more evasive, and better protected, and when cheap removal shifted toward unconditional answers rather than conditional taxes. But the underlying idea (punishing the act of tapping rather than the creature itself) resurfaces in later designs that care about activated abilities and combat triggers, and Spirit Shackle stands as a clean early execution of that thought: taxing what a creature does instead of what it is.
