Spirebluff Canal

Land

Untapped duals almost always charge you up front: a shockland takes two life, a painland bleeds one per activation, a checkland needs a basic type already on the table. This cycle moved the toll to the back end, keying entirely off how many lands you already control. Play it while your board is still lean and it comes in untapped, arriving without a tempo hit exactly when a low-curve blue-red deck wants colored mana most; once your fourth land resolves, every copy after it enters tapped no matter how fast you dumped your hand. The gate reads board state, not turn count or spells cast, so the untapped window is hard-capped: the first three lands can come down in any order and stay open, and everything past that pays the tax. That inversion sorts decks cleanly. A control deck routinely wants its fourth and fifth lands untapped for interaction, so this is the least forgiving dual it can run. Tempo and aggro have usually emptied their hands by the time the surcharge kicks in, which makes the drawback fall on turns they have already stopped caring about. It is a manabase priced to reward decks racing the clock over decks grinding it, a clean argument that a land's cost should track how a deck actually wants to spend its opening turns rather than levying a flat fee every game.
