Spiketail Drake

One of the cleanest expressions of the "creature that doubles as a soft counter" idea: a 3/3 flier that pressures the board, then cashes itself in to tax an opponent's key spell. The sacrifice clause is what keeps the tradeoff honest. Unlike a held-up counterspell, this version offers a Force Spike-style out (pay or the spell dies), so it rarely hard-stops anything; it buys a tempo swing or forces an awkward mana commitment instead. The crucial difference from a mana-cost counter is that the resource being spent is a permanent already on the battlefield, meaning the cost was paid turns earlier and the body did its job as a clock before it was ever needed as interaction. That shifts the timing axis entirely: the threat is deployed early, applies pressure, and the counter window opens only when the opponent finally commits to something worth answering. The same template was priced across two bodies in the cycle: Spiketail Hatchling, a smaller frame that demanded less from the opponent, and this Drake, a larger flier whose tax bites harder, the split letting designers tune the same effect against different clocks. The flier-as-Mana-Leak chassis has resurfaced in various guises since, but this is where the "evasive clock that flickers into a Force Spike" pattern was first laid out as a repeatable design.
