Spike Drone
The original Spike: the creature mechanic Tempest built around a 0/0 body that arrives propped up by a single +1/+1 counter, with an activated ability that lets it relocate that counter onto something else. The design idea is a creature as a reservoir of growth rather than a fixed threat. Every Spike shares this skeleton: enter with counters, spend them as fuel, and the strategic question is always whether the counter is worth more on this body or on another. This baseline version is the cheapest and plainest expression of it, the proof-of-concept that the splashier counter-movers later elaborated on. The friction is built into the math: moving a counter costs two mana and shrinks the source, so growth is a deliberate, mana-hungry process rather than a free one. But the ability carries no timing restriction, which means it lives at instant speed: you can hold up the two mana and shift a counter mid-combat to win a block, save a creature from lethal, or push damage through. What makes the template durable is that it ties power directly to a manipulable resource, so anything that doubles counters, blinks the body to reset it, or sacrifices it for value treats Spike Drone as a renewable supply rather than a creature. The card itself is humble, but it is the seed of a mechanical family that resurfaces whenever Wizards wants creatures that bank their stats instead of just having them.
