Spike Colony

The Spike creatures are a small mechanical family built around a single idea: a creature that is itself a reservoir of +1/+1 counters, distributing its own substance onto the rest of the board. This one stocks a four-counter pool and hands those counters out one at a time, paying mana for each transfer. Every counter you donate is power the colony itself surrenders; it grows your other creatures by shrinking, and once the reservoir is empty it is a 0/0 that falls off the battlefield. That is the restriction that keeps a five-mana effect honest. You are not buying a permanent anthem, you are buying a finite battery, and the mana cost on each activation means the body is at its largest the turn it lands and only spends down from there. The transfer ability carries no timing restriction, so the counters move at instant speed: it can pump a blocker mid-combat or save an attacker from a damage-based removal spell, then quietly shrink itself the following turn. The Spikes were an early experiment in treating counters as a portable resource rather than a static stat boost, a premise later generalized far beyond a single tribe (Hardened Scales and proliferate decks owe something to the notion that counters can be moved, multiplied, and banked). Spike Colony itself is the largest, plainest member of the family: no fancy redistribution, just a slow green engine that converts a fixed investment into flexible board presence one counter at a time.
