Green has always had answers to fliers: reach on a body, a fight spell that needs a creature to point at, a Plummet that only touches the sky. What this consolidates is the reach of those individual tools into one flexible sorcery, folding artifact and enchantment removal together with a clean kill for creatures with flying. The optional target is what keeps the flexibility honest: with nothing worth pointing at, the spell still resolves and leaves a Food token behind, so the card that whiffs on interaction is never a stone in hand. That token is the ledger balancing the effect. You are paying a card and a little sorcery-speed tempo for removal that spans three of green's natural target types, and the Food is the sweetener that keeps the rate reasonable across the games where the removal half misses or comes up empty. Each individual target type reads narrow, but the combination of broad target coverage and a fallback that banks toward three life means the card rarely sits dead, which is a rarer property in a green removal spell than the cost suggests. The design lesson is that a small guaranteed rider can rehabilitate a flexible-but-conditional spell into a reliable maindeck inclusion, because the floor is what players actually plan around.
