Spelltithe Enforcer
This is a Sphere of Resistance built into a body, and the difference between the two is everything. Static tax effects like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben or Lodestone Golem raise the floor on every spell; this one raises it only when the opponent cannot or will not feed it. There is always an out: pay the extra one mana and nothing happens. What it actually does is convert their mana into your tempo, turning every spell on a tight curve into either a tax or a permanent down the drain. Against a hellbent topdeck or a player who has tapped out, the sacrifice clause turns vicious, peeling away the very board they are trying to rebuild. The five-mana 3/3 frame on an Elephant Wizard is no incidental hatebear stat line; it is a clock that backstops the tax, and a permanent that has to be answered before the lock comes off. The design wrinkle is that the tax is opponent-only and asymmetric in a way the older symmetric tax artifacts never were, which is exactly why white's prison and stax traditions keep returning to this shape. It punishes the greedy and the broke alike without ever touching your own gameplan, and the further behind the opponent already sits, the harder the sacrifice clause bites.
