Counterspell-as-gamble, but the gamble runs through the spell's controller, and that controller does not have to be your opponent. Counter target instant or sorcery and the rider digs through that player's library until it reveals another instant or sorcery, which they may then cast for free. Pointed at the opposing player, you are betting the random hit is a downgrade from the spell you just denied: their tutored finisher becomes whatever cheap cantrip surfaces first, and the shuffle scrambles whatever they had set up on top. But the same wording invites you to counter your own spell: cast a one-mana trick into your own Spellshift, dig to the biggest instant or sorcery in your deck, and cast it without paying its cost. That self-targeting line is the design's real wrinkle, turning a four-mana tempo trade into a cost-cheating engine if your spell base is built around a single overpriced bomb. The exclusion is precise and matters: it reveals until an instant or sorcery card specifically, so a deck packing artifacts, enchantments, or planeswalkers walks right past them. This is color-pie engineering from an era fond of asking what blue could trade away to stay efficient: a counter that refuses to promise the outcome it sets up. Most of the time you turn a spell into a worse one; some of the time you turn your own worst spell into your best.
