Spawning Breath
The point of damage is almost incidental; the token is what this card is really selling. One damage on the way down occasionally clears a one-toughness creature or shoves through the last point, but the real work sits in the body it leaves behind: a Spawn that converts straight into colorless mana the instant you cash it. That folds part of the cost back into your turn, so the card reads less as a burn spell than as a ramp spell that happens to ping. Pay two, get a deferred mana source you can spend on the giant generic costs the colorless menaces were built to demand, plus a point of reach to keep the card from being dead when there is nothing to accelerate into. The token also lingers if you choose not to sacrifice it, standing as a chump blocker or sacrifice fodder rather than going to waste, which gives the card a patience its rate alone would not suggest. That is the tension it balances: an instant that does almost nothing on its face becomes a fixer bridging into colorless ramp, with the damage as cover. The disguise is the point.
