Soured Springs

Land — Desert

The tax on a tapped dual has always been that lost tempo point: the land sits on the battlefield doing nothing but exist on the turn it arrives. This design refunds a sliver of that, pinging an opponent for one on the way in. A single point rarely swings a game on its own, but it changes what the entry tax is worth in a deck built to close from range, where every increment of noncombat damage is inventory toward a finish. The trigger reads as incidental until you count the color pair it feeds: blue and black tend to grind the long game and often struggle to find the last few points against a stabilized board. A land that chips one off while it fixes is a small down payment on that plan, paid once, on the turn a card that already asks you to wait shows up. The damage targets an opponent specifically, not any player, so there is no cost to running it in a threat-light shell that would rather not point burn at itself. And it is a Desert, which ties it into a web of cards that care whether a Desert is under your control, a subtheme that has given the land subtype more mechanical weight than its early sparse appearances suggested it would ever carry.
