The replacement clause is the design pivot, and it rewires every burn spell you already run. Direct damage to a creature normally checks against toughness: deal three to a 4/5 and nothing dies. Convert that damage to three -1/-1 counters and the math changes entirely, because counters shrink power and toughness together and the shrink is permanent. A Lightning Bolt now leaves a 1/2 as a -2/-1 in the graveyard, or leaves a larger creature surviving but permanently smaller from that point on. The counters also slip past indestructible, since they modify a stat line rather than destroy anything, and they grind down creatures that are otherwise too big for your burn to kill outright. None of this asks for extra mana or setup; it is a passive rewrite of noncombat damage to opposing creatures while this is on the battlefield, and it stacks across multiple sources in a single turn. Prowess on the 1/2 frame is the secondary mode: a one-drop that becomes a real clock in a deck overflowing with cheap spells, which is exactly the deck that wants its burn doubling as creature removal. The whole package is built for a spell-dense aggressive shell where removal and beatdown share the same cards. The conversion is creature-facing only: it does nothing to damage aimed at faces, so the deck has to value board presence to cash in the upgrade rather than treating it as free reach.
