Sorcerer's Strongbox

Artifact4 generic mana

Card advantage with a coin flip stapled to it, and that flip is the entire personality. The math is brutal once you sit with it: each activation costs two mana and a tap, and half the time you pay that and get nothing, the Strongbox stays on the battlefield, and you try again next turn. Win the flip and you sacrifice it for three cards, a respectable Concentrate at a discount you can't schedule. The expected payoff is real, but it arrives on no fixed timeline, which is the opposite of what a card-draw engine is supposed to provide. This is variance dressed up as inevitability: you will eventually draw three, but "eventually" might be turn four or turn ten, and a deck that needs answers now cannot wait on a coin. The design belongs to a small family of cards that fold luck into their cost rather than their downside, asking the player to accept a swingy distribution in exchange for a rate that would be undercosted if it were guaranteed. Strip the coin and a four-mana artifact that taps for three cards on a two-mana payment would be a constructed staple; the flip is the tax, and it is a steep one. What's left is a card for tables where the floor doesn't matter and the long game is assured, where flipping until you hit is a luxury you can afford rather than a gamble you can't.
