Morbid was a clever attempt to make defensive bodies care about a board state that aggro and grindy decks both produce: the dead creature. Here the mechanic does its most honest work, because the reward is conditional and the floor is real. Miss the morbid condition and you have a 2/4 reacher, a perfectly serviceable air-defense piece that trades up against most early fliers and survives the burn that kills smaller blockers. Hit it, and the same body arrives as a 4/6, a wall large enough to block and outright eat ground attackers rather than just chump them. The design lesson is in how the condition reads the whole turn rather than just the moment of casting: any creature dying earlier in that same turn (a combat trade, a sacrifice, a removal spell) flips the switch, so the natural line is to let bodies fall in combat and then deploy the Spider in the post-combat main phase, while the death still counts. Reach is what ties the package together, since the creatures most likely to slip past a ground stall are exactly the small fliers a 4/6 with reach pulls out of the sky. None of this is flashy, and the rate was never meant to be: it is a midrange-floor archetype piece, built so that a board where things are dying rewards the player who held back.
