Solemn Simulacrum
Few cards have so thoroughly defined what "value" means in a format. The body is incidental; what matters is the two-for-one stapled to it. Casting it ramps you a basic land, blanks one removal spell's worth of card advantage, and then refunds itself when the creature dies, which makes it the rare four-drop that is correct to chump-block, sacrifice, or feed to a Goblin Bombardment without flinching. That structure (ramp on entry, card on death) gives it a presence in nearly every phase of a game: it smooths the curve early, soaks up an attack as a 2/2 blocker midgame, and converts to fuel late. Among the most reprinted nonland artifacts Wizards has ever made, it earns its slot in precon after precon precisely because it is colorless ramp with no real downside, the kind of inclusion no deck regrets. The design's enduring trick is that both halves point the same direction: the land it fetches comes in tapped (a small tax against pure free tempo), and the draw on death turns its own fragility into an asset rather than a liability. Jens Thoren's tournament-prize Golem became a kind of baseline for "generically useful," the card other utility creatures get measured against when designers ask whether a value engine is too good for the slot. It rarely wins games on its own, and it almost never feels wrong to have drawn.
