Snow-Covered Island
The functional twin of Island that exists for one reason: it carries a hidden data type. Snow is a supertype, and these lands are the cheapest, most invisible way to put snow permanents into play without paying anything for the privilege. The mana ability is identical to its non-snow counterpart, but the supertype turns every blue source into a fuel gauge for cards that count snow, demand it, or scale off it. That design pattern goes back to the card's original printing, where snow-matters effects were a deck-defining gimmick, and it has been periodically revived whenever a set wants to reward manabase commitment without touching the colors of mana. The trade is real: the supertype is also a liability, since cards that punish snow read your basics as legitimate targets. What makes this more than a reskin is that it lets a deck pay zero in deckbuilding cost to unlock a payoff, replacing ordinary Islands one-for-one and asking nothing in return except the small risk that someone is hunting snow specifically. It is the rare basic land whose presence in a list is a deliberate signal rather than a default.
