Skullmead Cauldron

Artifact4 generic mana

Lifegain that converts your dead cards into stabilization, with no commitment to playing it before you need it. The first ability is the floor: a colorless tap-for-one that asks nothing of you and does almost nothing. The second is the reason the artifact exists, turning the discard you would otherwise take as a loss into three life. That second mode is doing two jobs at once: it gains you a meaningful chunk against aggression, and it feeds graveyard strategies that want cards in the bin rather than the hand. The design tension is that neither rate is fast enough to matter on its own. One life per turn loses to almost any clock; three life per discard burns through your hand if you lean on it. The card only earns its slot when both halves point at the same plan: a slow, grinding deck that has surplus cards it would rather pitch than draw, and enough time to make incremental life relevant. So a builder reads past the stall-button framing entirely. What looks like a defensive piece is an outlet wearing a lifegain costume: a repeatable discard engine that happens to pay you back, valued less for the life it banks than for the bin it fills.
