Skirge Familiar

Creature — Phyrexian Imp4 generic manaBlack mana

Trading a full card for one black mana is, in a vacuum, the worst conversion rate the game offers: a card gone, a single colored pip back, no generic-mana sweetener to soften the loss. That ugly arithmetic is exactly why the imp became a combo cog rather than a curve filler. The discard flips into an asset the moment the rest of your deck wants the hand emptied or the graveyard fed, so the cost reads as fuel injection instead of attrition. Its most famous shells were the deep-draw black engines of its era: pair it with Necropotence or Yawgmoth's Bargain, draw well past your hand size, and dump the surplus into mana while rebuying the discarded pieces in a loop. The discard becomes throughput, not a tax. What keeps the design honest is the shape of the cost and what it pays: the ability charges no mana but eats a whole card per activation, and it produces black specifically rather than generic, so it never spirals into free fixing. It profits only when something downstream cashes the discarded cards back. The 3/2 flier is incidental, a throwaway clock bolted to a machine part nobody plays for the beats. Read alone, it converts terribly. Read as a piston in a recursion loop, it is among the cleanest hand-to-mana engines an early-era design ever shipped, and the reason a certain kind of combo pilot still counts hand size in mana rather than cards.
