Five power, five toughness, and not a word more: this is green vanilla at the size where vanilla used to be a fair deal. The card exists as a baseline measurement, the rate against which every green creature with an actual ability gets priced. For most of green's history a 5/5 for five with no drawback was the going wage, the body you got before you started paying extra for trample, haste, or a triggered ability. What makes it worth a moment is exactly that lack of text: it is a fossil of an era when stats alone justified a card slot, and watching where that line moved over the following decades (toward bigger bodies, cheaper costs, and free upside) tells you more about power creep than any single overpowered rare does. A reprint workhorse in the core sets of its day, it filled the role of honest beater in a draft pack and reminded newer players that green's promise has always been the biggest creature for the mana. The Ape does its one job without apology, and its plainness is the point: it is the ruler other green fatties are held against, not the thing you reach for once the rulers have been printed.
