Shivan Phoenix

Creature — Phoenix4 generic manaRed manaRed mana

Resilience without finality has always been the Phoenix's promise, and this is the cleanest early statement of it: it dies, it hits the graveyard, and the death trigger lifts it back to your owner's hand before it can stay there. That returns it next turn for another six. The trade Wizards extracted for that loop is bluntness. Six mana for a 3/4 flier is a body no one runs on rate alone, so the value lives in the recursion rather than the stats: a flier that survives sweepers, soaks targeted removal at a tempo cost, and refuses to settle into the yard. That tension (a creature whose floor is an overpriced beater, whose ceiling is an answer your opponent can never permanently spend a card on) is the through-line of nearly every Phoenix since, from the discard-and-return variants to the spell-triggered recursion engines. Where later Phoenixes cut the cost and bolted on conditions to crawl back from the graveyard, this one keeps the simplest version of the bargain. The catch is that because it dies first, the trip through the graveyard is a real window: exile effects and instant-speed graveyard hate can intercept it in the moment between death and return, and a fast enough clock makes recasting it for six a luxury the opponent never grants. It is the recursion idea stated plainly, before the mechanic learned to be cheap.
