Shivan Dragon

Creature — Dragon4 generic manaRed manaRed mana

A six-mana 5/5 flyer with a red-mana pump ability: the design template is almost embarrassingly simple, but it became the load-bearing definition of what a dragon was supposed to be for the next decade. The card set the expectation of what a "finisher" looked like, and through Urza's, Invasion, and Onslaught, every dragon Wizards printed was measured against it. The firebreathing ability is the structural detail that ages best: it makes the card scale with the game going long, gives red a use for mana it would otherwise waste, and threatens lethal in a single attack step in a way a vanilla flyer never could. Later printings refined the rate (Thundermaw Hellkite cut the cost and added an enters trigger; Stormbreath Dragon traded the firebreathing for protection from white and a monstrous mode), and modern dragon design has largely moved on from the six-mana slot entirely. What remains is the iconography. The Melissa Benson art, reprinted across nearly every core set for years, is the picture most players still see when they hear the word "dragon" in Magic. Its competitive life is long over; what endures is its role as a reference point, the thing every other red finisher is implicitly arguing with.
