The skip-untap clause is the genuinely nasty part: a soft-lock that reads mild and plays oppressive once it lands, stranding an opponent's lands and creatures tapped through a turn cycle, the kind of effect that wins races and breaks defensive stalls if it connects more than once. But the upkeep tax frames this as a tribal payoff rather than a standalone threat, because the sacrifice clause doesn't spare its own type. Shisato is itself a Snake, so cast alone into an empty board it has to feed itself to its own appetite at the very first upkeep: with no other serpent to offer, it eats itself before the lock-down ability ever gets a swing. That single contradiction shapes the entire card. The body that strands untap steps only persists as long as you keep another Snake in front of it each turn, which chains the card's relevance to a creature type that has rarely had the population to sustain a per-turn sacrifice. Surrounded by expendable Snakes it becomes an engine that punishes connection; alone it resolves against itself. This reflects a habit from the days when designers bolted steep upkeep costs onto legends to keep their lock effects in check, where the drawback was meant to be lived with rather than engineered around. The skip-untap ability never came cheap, and the cost it carries is paid in the same coin that makes it work.
