The damage redirection is the trick everyone remembers, but the pitch cost is the structure that lets it punch. By exiling a white card with mana value X from hand, you cast it for zero mana at instant speed, in response to a lethal swing or a burn spell pointed at your face: a card from hand turns an attacker's damage back on its controller or its own board. That is a Fog stapled to a reach spell, paid in card economy rather than mana. It belongs to a cycle of Arcane instants, one per color, each letting you exile an on-color card of the right mana value instead of paying mana, so each rewards a deck stocked with cards you would happily ditch in a pinch. What sets this one apart is that the redirected damage can kill. Because it is an instant, you can hold it through the declare attackers and declare blockers steps and fire it once you know exactly what is coming: block with a creature, let what would have been combat damage redirect, and aim it at a planeswalker, a player, or whatever you most want dead. The constraints are real (X locks in when you cast, and the source is a single chosen one, so a wide attack only lets you move one creature's worth). A defensive spell that doubles as a finisher, with the pitch structure as the reason it can be both at once.
