Shell of the Last Kappa

Most counterspells spend their value on the way down: you trade a card to deny a card, and the spell is gone forever. This artifact splits that transaction in two and tries to pocket the difference. Its first ability is a tax-gated shield that intercepts only instants and sorceries aimed squarely at you, and because it answers a spell mid-cast rather than countering it from your hand, the response happens during your opponent's window, exiling the offending spell instead of trading for it. The distinction is the whole engine, because exile is not the graveyard: those spells sit in storage, waiting. The sacrifice ability then cashes the hoard, letting you replay one of the captured burn spells or targeted disruptions without paying its cost. The flavor is exact, a kappa that catches what is thrown at it and flings it back, but the seams show everywhere. It answers only spells that target you, the controller. Each activation costs three mana plus the artifact's tap, so it intercepts one threat at a time and falls behind any opponent willing to point spells elsewhere. And the payoff requires sacrificing the shield itself: a one-shot conversion that surrenders all future protection for a single tempo swing. That narrowness is the price of an effect that would be oppressive if it caught everything. This is a defensive value engine from a slower design vocabulary, built to turn aggression into ammunition, written in a grammar of conditional answers the formats it lives in have long since outpaced.
