The trick this card pulls is the difference between fixing and ramp, and most of its ancestors stopped at fixing. Earlier basic-landcycling creatures put the fetched land into your hand: real card filtering, but no acceleration, since you still had to play the land off the top of your curve. This one puts the land directly onto the battlefield, and the sequencing in the reminder text does quiet but important work. You search and shuffle before the cycling draw resolves, so the discard advances your mana base and refills your hand in the same motion, with no card lost in the trade. That makes a 6/5 for six the kind of top-end that is never stranded: a fetch effect with a cantrip stapled on when your hand is clogged, a hardcastable body when the board calls for one. The Desert clause widens the search beyond basics, tethering the card to a land-matters context that rewards that type without confining the creature to it. What the design resolves is the perennial liability of the fat green creature that bricks an opening hand; rather than mulliganing around your top end, you read the board and decide which half of the card you need. The structure (a creature that is also a land-fetch that actually accelerates you) is the durable idea here, reusable far beyond the subtheme the Desert line points back toward.
