Shatterskull Charger
Kicker on this Giant isn't buying a bigger swing so much as buying the right to stay. Cast for its base cost and you get a 4/3 with haste and trample, a body priced above what red usually hands you at that rate, but the end-step return clause is the tax that squares the ledger: it hits for four, then bounces to your hand, ready to threaten the same damage next turn. Spend the extra two mana and the +1/+1 counter does double duty, pushing the body to 5/4 and permanently satisfying the return condition. That reframing is the whole evaluation. The cheap mode isn't a downside to route around; it's a recurring beater that never costs you a card to redeploy, only the to recast it, and it sits safe in hand from sorcery-speed sweepers on the turns it isn't attacking before converting into a stable board presence exactly when you have spare mana in the midgame. The counter-dependency also sidesteps a familiar failure of scaling creatures: there's no dead late-game draw here, because the same card is both your early pressure and your closer. It asks the deck to keep hitting while the Charger phases in and out, then cashes in the mana surplus a well-built curve eventually produces. Where most kicker cards offer a bonus you can ignore, this one splits into two genuinely different cards along a single decision, and neither half is filler.
