Shadowbane

Instant1 generic manaWhite mana

A fog with a grudge against black. The damage-prevention shield is the familiar half (pick a source, blank its damage to you and your board for the turn), but the rider is what dates this card to its color-pie moment: when the prevented source is black, the prevention converts directly into life gain. That conditional reward is a pure Mirage-era artifact, a window when white's removal and protection spells routinely carried anti-black clauses as a deliberate ideological friction between the two colors. The card is built to read as a punish-button against a specific opponent rather than a generic combat trick: against a red or green source it is a one-shot prevention shield, but against a black creature or burn spell it both saves your life total and swells it. The single-source choice is what keeps the rate honest; you neutralize one threat, not the whole board, so blanking the right source means reading which one actually matters. This is the hyper-conditional sort of white answer that color-hosing left behind once Wizards softened the enemy-color tax, and it survives mostly as a record of how literally the early color pie was enforced: white did not just resist black, it was paid in life for the resistance.

The next time a source of your choice would deal damage to you and/or creatures you control this turn, prevent that damage. If damage from a black source is prevented this way, you gain that much life.
