Serra

Vanguard

Vanguard cards never went into a deck; they sat beside it, rewriting your starting hand size, your starting life total, and granting a single passive effect that ran the whole game. This avatar leans on the oldest idea in white's playbook: durability over reach. The +0/+2 it hands every creature you control does not make your board hit harder, it makes your board harder to kill, blanking the one-damage pings and X/1 sweepers that white's small-creature shells have always feared. It is a defensive tax applied to every creature you commit, not a card you cast in a window. As a design object it reads as a thesis about the color's mascot: Serra's name has been attached to angels, sanctuaries, and life-gain effects across the game's history, and the Vanguard treatment distills that identity down to a single sustaining verb. The Vanguard experiment itself was a curiosity, mostly remembered now as a relic of the early online and casual scene, but the avatars remain one of the clearest looks at how the design team thought about color identity when they were free to write rules text that touched everything at once rather than one permanent at a time.
