Sengir Vampire
The original blueprint for "scary black flyer," and the finisher template that everything in its lineage inherits. The growth clause is the design idea worth lingering on: damage alone does nothing, and the counter only lands when a creature the Vampire itself damaged dies that same turn. That bookkeeping (track the combat damage, watch the turn end, check the graveyard) is a 1993 design that modern templating still leans on constantly: Kazarov, Sengir Pureblood and Sengir, the Dark Baron all key off the same "dealt damage by this creature this turn dies" trigger. What the template produces is a specific game state where combat math and removal timing both matter. The punishing case is a blocker: the Vampire trades blows with a creature it does not kill outright, then that creature dies later in the turn to a second source of damage or a removal spell, and the counter resolves precisely because the Vampire put damage on it. An unblocked swing hits the player and grows nothing; the engine only turns over when the Vampire has marked a creature for death. The rate has long since been outclassed (Vampire Nighthawk and the whole modern black-flyer curve all do more for less), but the design has descendants everywhere. Every snowballing vampire commander, every "grows when it kills" black flyer, every threat that punishes the wrong block owes something to this card. It is the ancestor, not the apex, and that is the angle: a foundational design whose descendants quietly retired it.
