Self-Inflicted Wound

Sorcery1 generic manaBlack mana

A hate card with a color allegiance baked into the kill condition. Most sacrifice-based removal lets the opponent dump their worst creature; this one narrows the pool to green and white before they choose, which is the whole point. Against a deck running neither color it sits dead in your hand, a deliberate cost that pays for the upside: against the right targets it kills protection-having and indestructible creatures that conventional black removal cannot touch, with the two-life clip as a bonus rather than the draw. The design lives in a long tradition of color-pie tax cards, the lateral cousins of Disfigure or Doom Blade that trade unconditional reach for a sharper edge against a specific slice of the field. What makes it sit oddly in that lineage is that the asymmetry is the green-white player's problem to solve, not yours: they pick which creature dies, so against a board of two big threats and a token, they hand you the token and shrug. The card is sharpest when the opponent has exactly one green or white creature worth killing and no chaff to feed it, and it tilts toward dead weight the moment the matchup falls outside its two-color window. That volatility is the cost of the rate; a clean two-mana edict that also pings life is only clean when the colors line up.
