Selenia

Vanguard

Granting every creature you control vigilance is a static effect that, in a normal game, costs a card and a slot to assemble; here it is the price of admission, baked into your seat before the first draw. That is the Vanguard experiment in miniature: pick a persona that adjusts your starting life and hand size, then bolt a permanent rules modification onto the entire match. Vigilance reads like a combat keyword, but as a global grant it does heavier structural work than the word suggests. It dissolves the usual tension between pressing an attack and keeping blockers home, so every swing becomes free defensively and the risk math of combat tilts toward the aggressor for as long as the game lasts. Strip an effect of its body and its mana, attach it to a seat at the table instead of a creature on the battlefield, and you get a keyword toggle on the format itself rather than a spell you cast. The avatars lifted their names from the existing story and card pool, so the flavor points outward to the broader setting rather than to anything printed on this object. As a rules artifact, Selenia is a useful snapshot of an era when Wizards was openly testing how far a game-altering, uncastable avatar could go.
