Sea Drake

Creature — Drake2 generic manaBlue mana

A 4/3 flier for three mana is a rate that should not exist, and the design knows it: the bounce clause is the bill. Returning two of your own lands to hand is not a drawback you pay once and forget; it is a structural tempo loan, fronting you an oversized evasive threat in exchange for stalling your development by two land drops. Most "ETB returns a land" creatures of this era asked for one land and called it even; doubling that cost is what lets the body run this far ahead of curve. The card's history is its real curiosity, though. It was printed in a beginner-focused product whose stated mission was simple, on-ramp gameplay, yet the math here is the opposite of beginner-safe: a new player reads a cheap flying threat, plays it, and watches their mana base collapse. Veterans saw the other half immediately, because the bounce can be aimed at lands that have already done their work. Tapped-for-value lands, lands with enters-tapped clauses you would rather replay, bounce-targets you can reuse: the cost becomes recoverable, and the 4/3 stays a bargain. That tension between a teaching set's intent and a tournament player's reading is the whole story. It is one of the cleaner cases of a card whose rate is balanced entirely by a downside the audience it was sold to could not navigate, and the audience it leaked to could partly defuse.
