Scythe Specter
Most discard riders care only that a card leaves a hand; this one cares which card. The trigger forces every opponent to pitch, then settles a tax on whoever discarded the highest mana value, converting that number straight into life loss. The opponent still chooses what to throw away, which is the whole tension: a hand of cheap spells bleeds shallowly, but the player sitting on an expensive bomb has to decide whether to feed it to the Specter or keep dumping cheaper cards and starving their own game plan. The damage is self-selected under duress, never higher than the cost each losing player was least willing to part with. Two structural quirks shape how it plays. First, it does nothing to an empty hand: no discard, no life lost, so the clock dulls against opponents who have already spent down. Second, the "greatest mana value among cards discarded this way" clause is not single-target. Every player who ties for the highest discarded value pays that full amount, so a multiplayer table can take parallel hits in one connection when several hands shed costly spells at once. As a 4/4 flier the body is an attrition tool rather than a finisher, asking the same uncomfortable question swing after swing rather than ending a game on one hit. It rewards a deck that can keep connecting through the air while opponents still hold cards worth losing.
