Scryb Sprites

Creature — FaerieGreen mana

Green pays a premium to interact with the air: historically it gets reach, the occasional fight spell, and not much else, because flying belongs to white and blue in the color pie. This 1/1 is the exception Wizards keeps circling back to, the cheap green faerie or insect with flying that lets a green deck go over the top of a stalled ground without bending the pie out of shape. On the green side it is the prototype for that whole lineage. The generosity is real (a green one-drop with evasion that matches white's cheapest flyers of the era), and the stat line is what pays for it: a single point of power dies to everything, trades into nothing meaningful, and forces the deck around it to supply the reason a one-power evasive body should matter. That is the entire pitch, which is why its standing has drifted steadily downward. The rate was generous in the early 1990s, ordinary by the late 1990s, unremarkable now. The lasting significance is narrow but genuine: this is the moment green's air force was first allowed to exist at all.
