Scorched Earth

SorceryX generic manaRed mana

Land destruction with a built-in tax that the spell makes you pay to itself. The X-discard cost is what keeps this priced the way it is: you cannot blow up the opponent's mana without dismantling your own at the same rate, one land in the bin for every land off the table. That enforced symmetry is the whole engine. The card is not a tempo play so much as a scorched-field equalizer, a way for a deck that has already abandoned the development race to drag the opponent back to parity with it. Where conventional land destruction (Stone Rain and its kin) spends a card and a turn to set the opponent back a turn, this spends lands you have already drawn to set the opponent back as many turns as you are willing to mirror. The reach scales with X, but so does the self-inflicted wound, which is why the spell rewards a player who has nothing left to lose: a flooded hand, a stalled board, a game already past the point where your own mana matters. It is a deliberately ugly button, the kind of effect that only makes sense when both players are losing and you would rather decide who loses faster.
