Scarscale Ritual

Sorcery1 generic manaBlue or Black mana

Night's Whisper with the bloodletting swapped for something stranger. Both draw two for two mana; both want a cost that stings without stalling the engine. Where the black staple takes the payment out of your life total, this one demands a withering of a creature you already control, which turns a downside into a steering wheel depending on where you point it. On a token or a spent chump it is a near-free draw. On a body with a death trigger, or one wearing a +1/+1 counter you would happily erase, or a graveyard-matters creature you want trimmed to a specific size, the shrink becomes the actual point of casting it: cutting your own board down is how you feed a sacrifice loop or reset an undying creature back to its base. The hybrid pip lets either a mono-blue or a mono-black deck cast it off its own colored source, but the additional cost is the design's real spine. Unlike the symmetric draw spells that ask for a discard or a chunk of life, this one requires a creature on the battlefield before you can cast it at all, which quietly locks it out of the empty-board topdeck mode where most card advantage earns its rent. It is card draw that arrives pre-attached to a build-around, an early instance of handing a removal counter a second job instead of treating it purely as a kill mechanism.
