The free-cast clause is the whole pitch. Rather than pay the five mana, you exile a white card from your hand and fire it off for nothing, which makes this a fog with the discount built into the casting: held up at zero mana when you need it most, paid in full when you have the floating white. The seven points of prevention is a hard ceiling rather than a blanket stop, but it carries a kicker most prevention spells never bother with. Every point you absorb on a creature returns as a +0/+1 counter once the dust settles, so the body that weathered the swing comes out of it permanently sturdier. This was Alliances' white entry in a cycle that tried to give every color a free reactive spell, and the asymmetry of that experiment is the whole story. Where the blue version, Force of Will, rewrote constructed Magic and never stopped defining how the game polices itself, the white cousin stayed a curio. The cost is exact and unforgiving: you spend a card to cast a card, and the payoff is conditional damage prevention rather than a hard answer. Prevention has always been white's most thankless effect, papering over a problem instead of solving it, and pitching a card to do it stacks one tempo loss on another. That is why the same free-cast frame produced a format pillar in one color and a footnote in this one.
