Scapeshift

Sorcery2 generic manaGreen manaGreen mana

Read as a ramp spell, the text trades lands for lands one-for-one, which sounds like a wash; the value lives entirely in what those fetched lands do on arrival. Sacrifice seven, return seven Mountains, and a Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle already on the battlefield turns each one into a burst of damage that ends the game on the spot. That is the trick the card is famous for: it converts a fully assembled land base into a single sorcery-speed lethal trigger, with no creature, no attack step, and no window for blockers. The design tension is that the effect does nothing without a payoff already in play or fetched in the same resolution, so it asks you to build a deck where lands themselves are the win condition rather than the support structure. The tapped clause does the balancing: every land arrives unusable that turn, so the spell cannot also dig you out of a mana stumble or chain into a second spell on the same turn. Few cards split this cleanly between vacuum and context: a strictly worse ramp spell when read alone, a hard combo kill the instant the right permanent shares the board.
