Scales of Shale

Instant2 generic manaBlack mana

Affinity has spent most of its life stapled to artifacts, where the cost reduction fed on a mana base of Ornithopters and Signets. Bolting it to a creature type instead is the quieter innovation here: the discount scales off a board you were already committing to combat, so a protective trick that would cost three at the top of a Lizard curve slides toward a single black mana at the exact moment the deck wants to swing. Everything hinges on that window. Indestructible plus lifelink at instant speed turns a favorable attack into a blowout, letting a defender trade in and simply not die while draining life off the connecting damage; the +2/+0 is the smallest part of the package, there mostly to make sure the buffed attacker outraces whatever it collides with. The catch is the one every affinity card carries: the tribe that makes it cheap is also the tribe a sweeper is aimed at, and a spell that protects one creature does nothing to answer the board wipe that killed the discount. It rewards a wide, developed Lizard board and punishes you for casting it on an empty one, which is an honest tension for a combat instant to run on. As a design, it reads as a deliberate test of whether affinity can anchor a creature-type deck the way it once anchored artifacts.
