Scalebane's Elite

Creature — Human Soldier3 generic manaGreen manaWhite mana

Protection from black is the load-bearing line here, and it tells you exactly which corner of the metagame this card was drawn to live in. A 4/4 for five in green-white is a perfectly fair body on its own; the protection clause turns it into a slanted answer aimed at the removal and creatures of black decks. Protection covers four vectors at once: it cannot be blocked by black creatures, it shrugs off black combat and noncombat damage, it slips past targeted black removal, and it cannot be enchanted or equipped by black sources. Against the right opponent that makes the body close to unkillable in combat and untouchable by their kill spells; against everyone else, it is a vanilla beater with a dead keyword. Note the boundary on that asymmetry: the ability only functions while the creature is on the battlefield, so it does nothing against a Duress or a Hymn that empties the hand before the Elite ever arrives. That gap is part of the honest reading of the card. This is white-green answering a specific color of the wheel with a creature whose value swings hard on what sits across the table, a design philosophy that runs straight back through the protection-from-a-color hatebears of early Magic. The keyword does the work that a sideboard card does elsewhere, baked into a maindeckable body, which is why cards built this narrowly tend to read as overcosted until the matchup arrives and the rate suddenly looks like a steal.
