Scabland

The painland template was already settled by the time this printed: the Adarkar Wastes cycle had established the clean trade where colorless costs nothing and colored output costs a life, with the choice of which to take left entirely to the caster. Scabland is that template plus one extra tax: it enters tapped. That single clause is the whole difference, and it is a meaningful one. A painland's value lives in its untapped immediacy, the ability to come down on curve and produce two colors of mana the turn it arrives without surrendering tempo. Force the land to spend its first turn doing nothing on top of the life-for-color exchange and the rate slides from premium to grudging. The colorless option still works as the painless safety valve it always was on a painland; nothing about the tapped clause changes the per-tap math once the land is online. What it changes is the cost of getting online at all. That makes this a record of repricing rather than redesign: the same life-for-fixing exchange that runs from the original dual lands through the painland cycle, here loaded with a tempo penalty that reads as Wizards testing how much friction the trade could absorb before it stopped being worth running. It sits at the expensive end of that ledger, legible now mostly as a rate the game moved past, a painland made slow without being made any safer.
