Land — Forest Plains

The structural template every two-color manabase has been measured against, and the rate was set before the design discipline existed to balance it. The design asks for nothing: two basic land types, both tap abilities, no life payment, no point of damage, no precondition at all. Every replacement printed since pays a cost this one does not. Shocklands trade life or a tapped entry for their untapped speed; check lands need a basic of the right type already in play; pain lands take a point of damage per color produced; the Triomes enter tapped in exchange for a third color and a cycling ability. None match the raw rate, because nothing built since has been allowed to. The basic land types are the load-bearing detail: fetch lands can find it, Knight of the Reliquary can tutor it, Wrenn and Six can return it, and every land-type-matters card in the game treats it as both a Forest and a Plains for free. That free type-coverage compounds the original duals' value: the card costs nothing to play, demands nothing back, and slots into a tutor and recursion web that newer duals only partially access. Wizards has acknowledged, in interview after interview, that the original ten were a mistake of generosity, and the entire history of dual-land design reads as a slow, deliberate effort to charge for what this card gave away.
