Savage Surge

Instant1 generic manaGreen mana

A straight +2/+2 at instant speed is the genre's most worn-out effect; the rider that follows it is what gives this spell a second job. Untapping the target turns a combat trick into a surprise blocker: cast it on a creature you have already attacked with this turn, and that tapped body can suddenly hold the line on the way back, covering both halves of the turn at once. The same untap untangles activated abilities that require tapping, letting a creature produce its tap effect, get pumped, then untap to use it again the same turn, which is where green's more contrived lines find a use for it. That second function is the card's real design seam. The +2/+2 sells it as a trick, but the untap is what lets it pull double duty as a single-target tap-untap engine, the kind of repetition green usually reserves for board-wide effects. It is narrow by green's standards, asking for a board state where one creature being available twice in a turn actually changes the math, but within that window it does something most pump spells cannot. The cost of that flexibility is that neither half is large: +2/+2 wins few fights it would have lost, and the untap matters only when you have a specific reuse already lined up. Walk into the turn knowing which of its two jobs you are buying, or the spell underdelivers on both.
