The "any player may activate this ability" clause is the entire point, and it is among the rarest design choices in the game: a token engine that belongs to the table rather than to whoever paid for it. The symmetry is deliberate, which makes the card less a build-around than a referendum on who at the table has the most cards to convert into bodies. That shared, downside-facing posture was an era's running experiment; designers of the period were toying with permanents that handed resources around freely, and this reads as the green token expression of that impulse: a discard-fueled army-builder indifferent to whose army it builds. What balances it is the cost of each Saproling. Every token demands a generic mana and a card emptied from your grip, so the player who pulls ahead is the one with surplus to spend, and an opponent can always answer your bodies by feeding the same enchantment from their own hand. It rewards whoever is already winning the resource war and singles out no one for punishment, the reason it never anchored a competitive deck. Its natural home is the multiplayer table, where a symmetrical engine becomes a political object: you decide who gets to make tokens off it, and so does everyone else seated around it.
