Sandsteppe Scavenger

The whole read on this card is bolster's placement rule, and it cuts both ways. Bolster does not target: the keyword instructs you to pile counters onto the flimsiest body you already control, which sidesteps shroud, hexproof, and protection entirely, but also fixes the direction of the growth. The counters flow downhill, toward whichever creature is least able to survive on its own, and you only get to break a tie among bodies already sharing that low water mark of toughness. On a developed board with a fragile one-drop or a token worth growing, bolster 2 lands where it does the most work and converts a small threat into a real one. On an empty board the Scavenger can only feed itself, arriving as a 4/4 whose enters trigger has already spent itself on its own back: no evasion, no reach, just a curve-topper that paid its ability to grow the creature that carried it in. That gap between floor and ceiling is the entire evaluation. It belongs to the green midrange lineage of finishers that repay their mana in permanent counters rather than immediate impact, and it sits low in that group precisely because the placement is dictated by toughness, not by where a player would want the counters. A five-mana enabler that only pays off once you already have creatures worth rewarding is a narrow ask, and the Scavenger makes that ask every single time it enters.
